Seriously?

Grey's Anatomy has to give one of their lead players cancer NOW? And have her go thru surgery? And freaking chemo? This is not entertainment, people. Thank God neither my husband nor my son watch this show. Seriously.

  1. Makes me want to kick someone in the shin.

Why can't they have someone contract e-bola or something?

  2. i don't watch that show, but i think if they do a realistic job of it and not romanticize or exaggerate it in ridiculous ways, then it might be good for the public to see what having cancer and chemo is really like. i had NO idea how bad chemo was before i went through it. if i had, i would have paid much more attention to the list of preventions for breast cancer--daily exercise (which i did not do), no alcohol (i had a glass of wine/night), etc., etc. i'm all for spreading the word as much as possible. if it makes even one person get their mammogram or their prostate exam or whatever, then it could be a really good thing!

  3. Deb - they didn't give her breast cancer, they gave her some rare, horrible Stage IV cancer mets to the brain, bone & skin. She's my least favorite character - so I'd have been happy if they'd just killed her off and didn't do this horror-story treatment crap with her. Last night they had her playing tricks on her friends after her 1st chemo - b4 the nastiness kicked in - faking illness to get them to do things she wanted, faking illness on the phone with vendors to get them to do things for her - being manipulative and shit.....it was kind of awful. Then toward the end of the episode she get's deathly ill - and they make her up to look like the ultimate CANCER PATIENT, of course. It just all made me woozy - when all I was going for was some mindless entertainment, doncha know. There's no lessons offered - get your mammogram, do this - don't do that. Maybe the lesson was - be wary of your friend getting cancer treatment, they may turn into manipulative bitches! But don't worry - they'll get thiers!

  5. i know lots of people who have had cancer and are going through chemo and ARE manipulative bitches! also who use their illness to lie their way to get what they want. and when i first went into the infusion room for my chemo, i was horrified at how deathly sick and pale and awful most of the people looked. later i found out that those were people whose cancer had returned and they were going through chemo AGAIN. too bad this TV show (it has the feel of a typical mind-numbing soap opera bullshit "drama") focused on a very weird part of the cancer experience.

  6. all you have to do is go on breastcancer.org forum boards. the place is full of them. it's really annoying. i know some in "real life" too, but can't name names!

i never did lose my coloring, never got dark circles, haven't lost all my eyelashes, and still have my eyebrows, and i'm almost finished with chemo. i think people who are healthy before chemo do really well. you are one of those!
